The first time I saw one of these ribbon hats was a couple of years ago on the Anthropologie site. It was so sweet and read something along the lines of “vacation” or “do not disturb” or “beaches are cool”….
Honestly, I can’t remember what it read, but what I can remember is that it was over $200. *Insert disdainful emoji here*. Since then, the trend has exploded and you can find these sweet accessories from Target to Neiman Marcus. They’re everywhere and I thought it was about time to put together a little DIY on how to whip one up at home.
All you need is…
A straw hat– mine was vintage and I snagged it for $9 but there are so many online!
Start by pushing the ribbon through the bottom of the brim leaving a small tail.
Next, begin to form the letters. I chose the phrase “La Mer”, but you can pick whatever you like! I did the lettering free hand, but you can chalk out a design if you need a little extra guidance.
As you go, tack down the ribbon with hot glue to set in place.
As you continue the letters, pull any ends to letters through the hat. Once lettering is complete, tie the ends together to keep the ribbon tight.
That’s honestly all there is to it! It can take some time to get the letters right, but once you get going, the project goes pretty quickly.
I also decided to replace the ribbon around the brim with a matching navy which is as easy as wrapping around and tieing.
Last step, hit up the beach! We don’t have any big beach plans yet, but I’m feeling the itch to see the waves before summer is out.
Let me know your favorite beaches to travel to! My family vacationed the Connecticut beaches every year as a child so those New England shores tend to be my favorite, but let me know if you have any secrets that I’m missing out on.
Until next time!
